European Super League Resurfaced After Supported By European Union Court Decision

Must read

JAKARTA – European Super League (ESL) or the European Super League is alive again. The European Union Court ruled that FIFA and UEFA had no right to violate EU competition laws when the world football and Europe federations blocked the formation of ESL in 2021.

Furthermore, the European Union Court said FIFA and UEFA should not monopolize football.

“The FIFA and UEFA regulations that create new inter-club football projects must obtain prior approval, such as the European Super League, and prohibit clubs and players from playing in the competition are against the law.”

“There is no FIFA and UEFA regulatory framework that ensures that the regulation is transparent, objective, non-discriminatory, and proportional.”

“Similarly, the regulations that provide FIFA and UEFA with exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of rights related to the competition are like limiting competition, given the importance of it for media, consumers, and television audiences in the European Union.”

“The court observes that organizing inter-club football competitions and exploitation of media rights is clearly an economic activity.”

“Therefore, they must comply with competition regulations and respect freedom of movement, even though the economic goals of the sport have certain special characteristics, such as associations that have certain regulatory and control powers and the authority to impose sanctions,” reads the European Union Court’s decision.

The decision made the ESL conspirators who still survive, namely Real Madrid and Barcelona as happy as possible.

Barca president, Joan Laporta, immediately uploaded his positive response on his personal X account.

“This Super League is him,” Laporta wrote.

In fact, Barcelona on the official website immediately voiced their satisfaction with the EU Court’s decision.

“As one of the clubs driving the European Super League project, FC Barcelona feels that the punishment paved the way for new elite football competitions in Europe by opposing a monopoly on world football. And, wanting to start a new discussion on the path European competition must take in the future.”

In three years with Real Madrid. As one of the initiators, Los Blancos voiced his approval of the EU Court’s decision on the club’s official website.

“At Real Madrid we welcome with extraordinary satisfaction the decision taken by the European Union Court, which is responsible for ensuring our principles, values and freedoms.”

“In the next few days, we will study carefully the scope of this resolution. However, I anticipate two conclusions that have great historical meaning. First, that European club football is not and will never again be a monopoly. Second, starting today European clubs will no longer monopolize their fate.”

“The clubs see our right to propose and promote European competitions that modernize our sport and attract fans from around the world fully recognized. In short, today Europe’s freedom has triumphed again and today football and its fans have also triumphed.”

“In the face of the pressures we have received for more than two years, the law, common sense, and freedom are valid at this time. For this reason, Real Madrid will continue to work for the good of football,” said Real Madrid’s statement.

Meanwhile, the EU Court’s decision was also welcomed by Bernd Reichart, who was appointed CEO of ESL.

“UEFA monopoly has ended. Free football. Clubs are now free from sanctions threats and free to determine their own future!”

“For fans, we propose watching all European Super League games for free.”

“For clubs, income and solidarity spending will be guaranteed.”

No wonder, after the EU Court’s decision, ESL immediately announced a new format for competition under A22 which was appointed as an operator company. In fact, crazy, they had the idea of 80 clubs leaving UEFA to form an ESL.

The new format announced by ESL consists of 64 teams and is divided into three divisions, namely Star, Gold, and Blue with a promotion-relegation system.

In addition, the new ESL format will not include Premier League teams that clearly refuse to participate.

For information, ESL has actually been echoed in 2021 and is planned to take place in August 2021. However, the establishment of ESL is opposed by many parties and clubs who are listed one by one to resign.

Initially, ESL was led by Florentino Perez as Chairman and accompanied by Andrea Agnelli (President of Juventus) and Joel Glazer (Bos Manchester United) as his deputy.

JP Morgan has even prepared funds of 3.5 billion euros or Rp61.37 trillion to roll out ESL.

However, 48 hours after the launch of ESL in 2021, the project was immediately bombarded with rejection so that it failed to run.

However, the remaining two clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are still holding on to their stance and filing a lawsuit to the European Union Court.
