Discovering Sri Lankan Biodiversity through Sports Activities

Within the framework of the “EU support to local and sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka” and the EU funded project “Community Livelihood and Biodiversity Recovery” (COLIBRI), the EU delegation to Sri Lanka organised a ‘Team Europe BIOthlon’ – social multi-sport/recreational activity event to raise awareness about integrated approaches to promoting community-based sustainable tourism while protecting the biodiversity and mitigating the impact of climate change.

The first Team Europe BIOthlon in Sri Lanka was held from 23-25 June in Kalpitiya at a tourism hotspot of Kandakuliya Kudawa and brought together a group of over 35 participants, consisting of sports stars as well as local community members and development partners who participated in 5 different recreational activities (kayaking, cycling, running, swimming and kite-surfing) organized in sequence. Participants also had an opportunity to visit the Wilpattu National Park and the impact of the GIZ’s (German Agency for International Cooperation) support in that area.
