BREAKING! Germany Launches ‘Opportunity Card’ for Nigerian, Indian & Ghanaian workers to apply for jobs from June 2024

Must read

Germany has introduced the ‘Opportunity Card’ to attract skilled workers from non-EU countries, including Nigeria, to seek employment opportunities in Germany.

This initiative, announced on June 1, 2024, by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office Consular Services Portal, allows applicants from third countries (countries not part of the European Union) to apply for a residence permit to enter Germany for job search purposes.

About Germany’s Opportunity Card

People can apply for the so-called Opportunity Card, known as the Chancenkarte in German, if they have had at least two years of vocational training or possess a university degree recognized in the country it was obtained in.

The Opportunity Card is a residence permit valid for up to one year. It allows holders to seek qualified employment in Germany. If the holder finds employment during their stay, they can apply for a subsequent residence permit to continue searching for a job or to take up employment, as approved by the local foreigners’ authority in Germany.

Key Requirements:

– Recognition of Professional Qualifications: Applicants need proof that their professional qualifications are recognized either in Germany or in their country of origin.

– Financial Means: Applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves during their stay, typically requiring at least €1,027 per month (as of 2024). This can be shown through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.

– Work Permission: During the job search period, applicants can work part-time for up to 20 hours a week and take up trial jobs for up to two weeks to familiarize themselves with potential employers.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following basic requirements on a points-based system:

– Education/Training: Completion of a degree or at least two years of state-recognized training.

– Language Skills: German language skills at least at level A1 or English language skills at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

– Financial Resources: Sufficient funds to cover living expenses during their stay in Germany.

The Opportunity Card operates on a points-based system with the following requirements:

  • Completion of a degree or at least two years of training recognized by the state of issuance.
  • German language proficiency at least at level A1 or English proficiency at level B2 of the Common

European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

How do I Apply?

This application process is for Nigerians.

Nigerian applicants are advised to follow the guidelines provided by Germany’s diplomatic missions in Nigeria for visa application:

– Applicants must apply for their visa at the German mission responsible for their district of residence.

– If online application services are unavailable, applicants should apply on-site at their competent German mission.

– Further information can be found on the websites of the respective German missions in Nigeria.

This initiative by Germany is part of a broader trend among foreign countries seeking skilled expertise globally. Notably, there has been a significant increase in Nigerian healthcare workers migrating to countries such as the UK, Canada, and the US.

For more detailed information and updates, applicants are encouraged to visit the official websites of Germany’s diplomatic missions.
