Belgium, June 24: After the introduction of DMA (Digital Markets Act 2023) by the European Union, Apple was alleged by the EU to have breached the rules a few times. The EU regulators reportedly accused Apple of breaching the DMA act by not allowing the app developers to guide customers to choose cheaper services. According to a report, the EU started its investigation in March, which resulted in preliminary findings. Apple could be in big trouble this time as the European Union might charge a huge fine from the tech giant, said the reports. 

If the European Union finds Apple guilty, it could pay up to 10% on its total $383 billion global revenue, as per the statement by the organisation’s executive arm. The European Union launched an investigation against tech giants like Meta, Google and Apple. The investigation was about whether these tech companies were complying with or failing to meet the new Digital Markets Act. On Monday (June 24, 2024), the EU said it had also opened another investigation on whether Apple’s new contractual requirements for app developers breached the DMA.

According to the report, Apple’s requirements for app developers included a ‘core technology fee’ that charged developers €0.50 for each app installation. The Commission said in its press release, “By sending preliminary findings, the Commission informs Apple of its preliminary view that the company is in breach of the DMA.” It mentioned that the outcome of the investigation was without prejudice, and Apple would need to exercise its rights of defence by examining the investigation files and replying in writing to the Commission.
