On Thursday, the European Commission announced that it is introducing temporary countervailing duties on battery-powered electric vehicles imported from China, while negotiations with China continue, reports KAIPKADA.LT.

“Today, nine months after the opening of an ex officio anti-subsidy investigation, the European Commission has imposed provisional countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China,” the European institution said.

According to the report, based on the investigation, the European Commission “concluded that BEV es chain in China uses unfair subsidies, which poses a threat of economic damage to EU BEV producers”. The investigation also examined the likely consequences and impact of these measures on EU importers and users of electric cars, the European institution added.

Consultations with the Chinese government have reportedly intensified in recent weeks following an exchange of views between European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao.

“Communications are underway at the technical level to reach a WTO-compliant solution that adequately addresses the concerns of the European Union. Any agreed outcome of the investigation should be effective in combating the harmful forms of subsidization identified,” the European institution said.

The three selected Chinese producers are subject to the following individual duties:

  • BYD: 17,4%;
  • : 19,9%;
  • SAIC: 37,6%.

The other Chinese BEV producers involved in the investigation, which cooperated and were not sampled, are said to be subject to a weighted average duty of 20,8%. Other non-cooperating companies are subject to 37,6% duty.
