Construction workers protest for simplification of registration rules – Times of India

Ranchi: Construction workers under the banner of the Jharkhand Rajya Nirman Kamgar Union (JRNKU) protested in front of the labour commissioner’s office for their 14-point charter of demands, including simplification of registration rules and raise in minimum wages. They handed over a memorandum of their demands to the office staff.Earlier, they staged a rally from the Shree Krishna Singh Park to the labour commissioner’s office.The working president of the JRNKU, Bhawan Singh, said, “The rules for online registration of workers should be simplified. The workers have to visit the office several times for online registration due to technical snags, requirement of additional documents, and other reasons. They are mostly uneducated and live on daily earnings, which take a hit. Around 700 workers could not renew their registration due to the new regulation.”Citing their other demands, Bhawan said the minimum wages of the construction workers should be increased to Rs 600 per day.

The European Parliament and EU member states have reached a deal to strengthen conditions for app workers, potentially reclassifying many as employees and granting them labour and social protection rights. Around 5.5 million workers in Europe may have been wrongly classified as self-employed. The new rules introduce transparency and accountability for algorithms and ensure better rights for the least protected workers. They also promote fair competition among platforms. The agreement stipulates that workers fulfilling two out of five indicators of control or direction will be considered employees. Additionally, platforms are prohibited from processing personal data such as beliefs and private exchanges with colleagues.

Under construction site worker died after falling from eighth floor duct

A 22-year-old construction worker, Debashish Roy, fell from the eighth floor of an under-construction building in Andheri (East) and died due to multiple injuries. The contractor, Iqbal Punjabi, has been booked for not providing safety nets and safety gear. Roy was rushed to the hospital by two other workers, Vijay Haldar and Ali Hussain, but was declared dead on admission. The accident occurred while Roy was working without light on the eighth floor, handing over cement for plastering. The site workers were not provided with safety gear.
