In recognition of the efforts and contribution in disseminating information here, four local media organisations were presented awards by the European Union last night.

The awards, held at the the EU’s headquarters in Suva, was divided into four categories – print, online, broadcast and television.

EU Head of Delegation for the Pacific Andrew Jacobs commended the local media saying they had played a vital role in publicising the EU’s Year of Development.

The programme involves the dedication of each month to addressing the EU’s areas of focus and support in their work in Fiji and the Pacific – education, sustainable growth, children and youth, climate change, human rights, health, women and girls, peace and security and other things.

“We’ve given these prizes to those organisations who we thought have been very instrumental in helping us to publicise the European Union Year of Development to really publicise the way in which the European Union is working effectively in Fiji and around the Pacific,” Mr Jacobs said.

The winners were judged from stories that published between January 1 and November 30 this year.

“We looked at which organisation had the most articles and television broadcast and based on that we decided to award the prizes. There’s been a wide range of different other organisations with whom we have been really pleased to work with as well,” he said.

As part of the winners’ package, each media organisation would be sending a journalist each to attend and cover the 2016 Development Days in Brussels in the coming year.
