The European Union has announced the selection of four innovative cross-border renewable energy projects for funding under the 2023 CEF Energy call. This initiative, oversubscribed with requests totaling EUR 1.02 million, underscores a strong commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions across member states.
The projects span diverse sectors including offshore wind, green hydrogen, and solar PV, involving collaboration among five EU countries: Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and Poland. Each project aims to assess feasibility and prepare for implementation to accelerate the region’s energy transition.
Project Highlights:
- Madoqua Green Fuels Terminal Lda: Located at the Port of Sines in Portugal, this project plans to establish a green fuel storage and bunkering terminal powered by solar PV installations. It aims to bolster large-scale deployment of renewable energy, producing green methanol, biogenic CO2, and green ammonia for export to Northwestern Europe.
- Cross-border Pomeranian Green Hydrogen Cluster: This initiative focuses on creating a cluster integrating wind and photovoltaic sites with electrolysers and pipeline installations. It aims to connect renewable power and hydrogen production facilities directly to consumers.
- Cross-border cooperation on potential offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea: Proposed in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea and connected to the German electricity grid, this project will conduct feasibility studies and regulatory assessments for an offshore radial wind farm.
- Hanseatic Wind: Investigating a potential offshore wind farm in the North Sea, this project explores connectivity via a high voltage direct current (HVDC) hybrid interconnection. It aims to optimize renewable energy integration across Germany and Scotland.
These studies, spanning 12 to 24 months, will lay the groundwork for future initiatives under the CB RES status call, promoting seamless integration of renewable energy sources and enhancing the EU’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.
Background on CB RES Initiative:
The CEF Energy’s cross-border renewable energy window fosters collaboration among member states to develop and exploit renewable energy sources efficiently. By facilitating integration through energy storage solutions, the initiative contributes to achieving Union-wide energy goals, enhancing security of supply, and completing the internal energy market.
This selection marks a significant step toward achieving sustainable energy transitions across Europe, reinforcing the EU’s leadership in renewable energy innovation and cross-border cooperation.
