The European Union (EU), announced on Wednesday, that it has committed 250,000 euros (over 2.26 crore) to assist those affected by the severe hailstorm and heavy rain that struck Manipur.

The EU’s humanitarian aid will be directed towards the most vulnerable families in some of the hardest-hit regions.

The relief efforts will be executed through the EU’s humanitarian partner, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), benefiting more than 1,500 families.

A severe hailstorm hit large parts of Manipur on May 5, damaging over 48,000 homes, infrastructure, and farmland across 16 districts. The storm lasted 15 minutes, with hailstones up to four to five inches wide, causing major urban flooding and widespread power outages.

The primary focus will be on distributing food and emergency shelter kits to individuals whose homes and livelihoods have been severely impacted by the storm.

“The EU funding is being made available via the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) department of the European Commission,” it added.
