In another set of positive news for the EU, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, reported positive unemployment numbers today.
According to the released figures, the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 6.4% in April 2024.
This was down marginally from 6.5% in March 2024 and in April 2023, a movement which Eurostat
described
as “stable”.
A record low
This represents the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded by Eurostat, since the Euro and European Union was established.
Previously the 6.4% level was also reached for November 2023 as well.
Month-on-month, unemployment decreased by 103,000 in the EU and by 100,000 in the total euro area since March 2024.
However, compared with April 2023, unemployment increased by 95,000 in the EU year-on-year. For the same period, it decreased by 101,000 in the euro area.
Italy hits 16 year low for unemployment
Also making headlines today was one European country in particular. Italy, which also released its latest unemployment figures this morning, showed that the nation’s unemployment rate declined to
6.9
% in April from 7.1% in March 2024.
This means that unemployment in Italy is now at its lowest level since before the global financial crisis, in early 2008.
