Spotlight on humanitarian aid to Guatemala – Addressing food insecurity in the Dry Corridor

We are organising a media trip for journalists to Guatemala, which will take place from 27 to 31 May 2024 (travel days not included).

Long-term droughts, the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the effects of El Niño since 2023 have eroded food security and the coping capacities of vulnerable populations in the Dry Corridor of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua). More than 9.3 million people are food insecure (Humanitarian Needs Overview 2023).

Furthermore, the region is regularly exposed to natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, flooding, and volcano eruptions, necessitating urgent emergency aid (e.g., Hurricanes Eta and Iota at the end of 2020, Hurricane Julia in 2022).

During the media trip, you will visit Chiquimula, where you will see how EU-funded projects improve the food situation in the Dry Corridor by providing cash assistance to households identified as suffering acute food insecurity, and by monitoring malnutrition in children under 5 years of age.

You will be able to cover the following activities:

  • visit beneficiary homes and plots,
  • nutritional monitoring to identify cases of acute malnutrition,
  • multipurpose cash transfers distribution,
  • practical workshops for balanced, nutritious food,
  • reference of severe malnutrition cases to the regional facility.

Extended deadline for registration: 20 March 2024, 17:00 CET.
