KOTTAYAM: The Netherlands government informed the state government that its health sector does not need manpower from Kerala as it is not recruiting anyone from outside the European Union. This stand of the Dutch government has come as a blow to the state which was keen to provide trained nurses for the Dutch health sector.

According to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Dutch ambassador had called on him at Kerala House in New Delhi in July this year and said that his country immediately needed 30,000 to 40,000 nurses. Vijayan said that the ambassador had lauded the nurses from Kerala, saying that were in high demand due to their professional excellence and dedication to duty. Following this, the CM had directed the resident commissioner in New Delhi to coordinate with the Dutch embassy on the steps to be taken to move forward on the proposal.

In a written reply to a query regarding the same by P C George MLA in the state assembly, Vijayan said that the state and the Dutch government have not inked any agreements on the recruitment of nurses. “The Netherlands government was informed that it could contact the Norka department or resident commissioner in Delhi regarding their need for nurses. Based on this, the NORKA department officials had held discussions with principal secretary and Netherlands ambassador. It was during this talks that the Dutch informed that they cannot recruit anyone from outside the Europe Union. Their first priority is for the local residents and the second priority is for candidates belonging to countries which are part of the European Union,” informed Vijayan. Dutch ambassador to India Marten van den Berg had also written to the chief secretary regarding this, Vijayan said.

In another query raised by George, Vijayan said that the knowledge of Dutch language is mandatory for landing a job in the Netherlands. He also said that he is unaware of any institute in the state that trains candidates in Dutch language.
