    Deal corruption with iron hand: Supreme Court tells HCs

    The Supreme Court in a recent judgment said that corruption poses a serious threat to society and must be dealt with iron hands while setting aside an anticipatory bail order granted by the Gujarat high court to a senior Income Tax official accused of receiving a bribe of 30 lakh.

    In an order passed on Monday, a bench of justices Surya Kant and JK Maheshwari said, “Corruption poses a serious threat to our society and must be dealt with iron hands. It not only lead to abysmal loss to the public exchequer but also tramples good governance.”

    The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the state government over a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking steps to prevent deaths of sanitation workers and compensation to the families of those who had died while cleaning drainage lines and septic tanks.

    The division bench of acting Chief Justice A J Desai and Justice Biren Vaishnav issued a notice returnable on May 1, 2023 over a plea filed by NGO Manav Garima.
