KOLKATA: Haryana-born Rahul Kumar made history last month when he was elected as a city parliament member in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. According to Indoeuropean.eu, a website for Indians in the European Union, this is the first time an Indian-origin candidate has won a city parliamentary election in Germany.
Kumar, a computer scientist, moved to Germany for education and later worked in diverse industries including banking, automotive and medical sectors before embarking on a career in politics. On his campaign website, the newly-elected member said that in recent years, Frankfurt has become a multinational home for people from across the world and as a candidate for the local elections, he was representing diversity in the city parliament.
He added that he’s lived in the city since he was a teenager and loved the diversity it represented. Since 2013, Kumar has been active in political and community work and in 2017, was elected the local chairman of Free Democratic Party (FDP). In 2020, he joined the Freie Wahler Party or Free Voters party and was appointed chairman for Frankfurt-West.
Kumar’s most important election campaign issue was helping the people of Frankfurt with an immigrant background integrate better and work for a city with rich cultural diversity. His demands include free German language courses for all. The Free Voters party also campaigned for better healthcare facilities, especially for senior citizens.
